Thank you both!
Encouraged by your praise of stability of the devel-release 
i decided just to install the 0.9.8 release and deinstall 
0.8-release. And it works fine!
Perhaps anyone is interested in the fact that I did not 
"make install". Instead I used the nice program checkinstall 
(http://asic-linux.com.mx/~izto/checkinstall/).

This program builds a *rpm-Package you can work with as you 
are used to do so with other RPMs. For me this is an 
additional advantage if it will be necessary to test a 
further devel-release in the future.
