I use a gnu program called stow. When compiling I use something
like ./configure --prefix=/usr/local/stow/scribus-20031210, and
use stow to create the proper symlinks in /usr/local/bin, etc
("cd /usr/local/stow ; stow scribus-20031210").
To purge my "old" scribus install, I simply "rm -fR
/usr/local/stow/scribus-20031210". Or I can keep my old install,
and simply have stow symlink a new scribus-DATE version ("cd
/usr/local/stow ; stow --delete scribus-20031210 ; stow
scribus-20031225").
