[Scribus] question on size

So, I just finished my newsletter on 1.0RC1. I have a list of 
improvements I think need to happen, but I'll save those for another 
time. Right now I just have one question.

With only text, my newsletter is 635 KB (exported to PDF). Then I add in 
555 KB worth of photos. By my math, that comes to 1190 KB. Yet the final 
PDF is 2.6 MB. What's up with that? And I also learned that PDFs don't 
compress, which doesn't make me happy, either.
