There is a bug with some Ati cards in Xfree86 :

With my mdk 9.1 and an Ati radeon 7000 the problem 
is solved by the instalation of : XFree86-server-4.3-6.1mdk.i586.rpm 
(you must use rpm -force and nodeps options), now it's ok for me.

I not sure this is the problem, but hope that could help ...
