I would try updating autoconf.   This eliminated a lot of problems
Franz, Paul and I had when Franz installed the first CVS.  Paul and I
had build errors on RH 8 and Franz has Suse 7.2 or 7.3.

We found it was caused by an old version Franz had on his machine.
