[Scribus] strange text display

in scribus v1.0.1 on redhat 9, i'm seeing a strange text display 
characteristic: text looks normal when displayed at default zoom 
setting, but at anything above 100% the text becomes squished together 
and unreadable. it's as if the font size is too big for the spacing 
between letters. it's only on the display (and print preview), and only 
when zoomed. everything prints fine.

anyone else seeing this problem, or have any clues about solving it?
