It worked well for me with a simple "./configure
--prefix=/usr/local/gs8". Apps I want to use the new GS I call via a
wrapper, eg:

#!/bin/bash
export PATH=/usr/local/gs8/bin:$PATH
exec /usr/local/scribus/cvs-2004-03-14/bin/scribus
