You might check out Sodipodi -- I didn't have much difficulty getting it 
going. The interface looks similar to Inkscape, and you just need to 
play around with the various buttons -- there are a surprising number of 
  features to it.

I seemed to get crashes when I began rotating things...one interesting 
"feature" is that when it was getting ready to crash it politely told me 
that it had saved what I was doing and showed me the file name.
