And verified. I took a leap and grabbed the latest development snapshot of 
what will be freetype-2.1.10, created a 2.1.10_alpha ebuild, installed it and 
remerged scribus-cvs. Wow, what a difference in the outlines. And the pdf 
export now looks correct.
As a plus Firefox isn't crashing on Helvetica like it did with 2.1.9, but both 
Firefox and Xorg have been upgraded since I last had 2.1.9 as well.

Yes, same problem. But print preview is often wrong, especially with 
transparencies.
