Hi Christoph,

You might find very useful to refer to the very well documented 
"Chicago Manual of Styles" for lots of info on that (and lots more), 
along with typographic rules or usage in many languages. Sorry I 
don't have the answer by heart for English typography, and my own 
copy is at the office. ;)
