Ok, now I see.  I don't know if you've tried out the new Inkscape (0.42) 
but one of the things it does is give you little messages in the border 
at the bottom to give clues as to what to do next.  So maybe Importing 
could tell you, "This EPS can be edited" or something to that effect?
