Incidentally, I got a reply from HP Tech Support.  Here it is:

So there it is.  I don't know why they couldn't tell me that when I
asked them the first time.

Now I guess there is no reason not to recommend this printer to folks
who might need a colour laser that works with Linux.  It is a nice
printer, the little bit that I have printed with it so far.
