This should not be a problem. When you compile gs, it will by default
install to /usr/local. You just need to make sure /usr/local/bin is in
your path ahead of /usr/bin, which is probably where your distro puts
gs.

The main gotcha is probably whether you have development libraries
installed.

Debian has a command to install the build dependencies for a particular
package, maybe SuSE has domething similar?

i.e., under debian I can just do a quick:

        apt-get build-dep gs

and all the appropriate dev packages will be installed.

I recently built gs8.50, since debians afpl version is still at 8.14.

All I had to do was a

        ./configure
        make
        make install

and it worked perfectly.

PS - for those of you who have been having troubles with CMYK images, my
updated CMYK patch with support for CMYK tifs is nearly ready :)
