Not sure what you mean about this "scratch space" -- do you just mean 
the background around the page?

One of my challenges is trying to have enough space to work with.  It's 
hard to see what you're doing if the magnification is less than 100%, 
and I usually keep the Properties tools on the screen since I use it so 
much.
I wonder if there could be a scratch space that slides up and down (or 
whatever) from a small window title bar so you can have it handy but 
zipped out of the way when you don't need it. Somehow it would have to 
"hang on" to whatever was on it.
