I recall having difficulties in rendering my 800+ page Ph. D. in LaTeX 
some years ago due to this limit. I had to change the value in one of 
LaTeX's config files, so it may not be necessary to work with sub-files 
at all. IIRC, LaTeX is quite verbose in telling which file is concerned 
and what has to be modified.
