Just about everything.

Not really. They are just shared objects which have to be compiled 
together with the main application.

No. There are some vague thoughts that it would be nice to have an 
interface to be used by plugins, but nothing is there yet. Would 
probably nice to sync that interface with the Python interface of the 
Scripter plugin.
