[Scribus] serious mac trouble

That's not a bad idea. I've installed Ubuntu on a dual G4 1.25GHz 
(kept the Mac OS nonetheless). Works like a charm. I just followed 
the onscreen installation. Oh, and I am just a plain user! (I mean 
it).

Anyhow, I think it is important to solve your problem and get the 
machine to work properly, no matter the OS. I've been running Mac OS 
X (mostly the 10.3 series) for months now (years?) and encountered 
very few problems. Nothing that was not fixable through the disk 
utilily provided by Apple. Or else, it was a defective hard drive. 
And we do beat those machines, everyday, in production situations.

As a first step, I would suggest you create a new user on your Mac 
and see if the problems remain. If not, this will indicate most 
likely you have a corrupted user prefs which you can in turn store 
away and let the OS create new ones. I am not a technician but I 
guess your Mac vendor should be able to help you further with this 
kind of manipulation.
