[Scribus] Should Font Preview display font shapes?

I'm sure this is another newby gotcha.

I'm trying to use Font Preview to preview the text in different fonts.

It displays a list of available fonts, the ones in use in my document 
are ticked. Beneath that is an empty white box - presumably the preview 
field then font size field, text field, set button, undo button, append 
button, close button.

I don't get to see any preview. How do I go about it?
