Hi Jennifer,


this might be a problem with the font you use. The '1' is usually  
much smaller
than the other digits, but most fonts give all digits the same width  
to ensure
they line up properly. Especially with sans serif fonts this looks  
bad with centered
pagenumbers.

Try using Bitstream Vera Sans for the pagenumbers or some other font  
which
gives the '1' a decent size.
