This is all very strange to try to figure out. I tried to get Firefox to 
/not/ show these characters above, but nothing I did made any difference.
I then tried copying to Klipper, and the first and last characters 
showed only bullets.
I was able to set up Konqueror to finally show them, by setting the 
Fixed font to either "AR PL KaitiM GB" or "AR PL SungtiL GB".
In the Control Center, the Menu font needed to change to fix Clipper's 
display. One problem is that these are both serif fonts (a bit hard to 
read), so I need to see if I can find a sans-serif for Chinese characters.
Checking out KDE's site was not helpful.
