I don't think so, just worded in a way to allow misunderstandings. I think
Peter meant:
"In the *ix world there is a different application for each task". This is a
part of the Unix
philosophy and has its power, because you flexibility in combining all that
applications and
can achieve results which wheren't imagined by the original software
developers.
I grant that "Not inventing the wheel twice" is not part of the FOSS
philosophy. And that's
a good thing. If you think you can invent a better wheel and feel like doing
it, why shouldn't you?
Users will decide if they like it better or not. Even if it looks as if this
generates religious schisms
like in the vi/emacs and KDE/Gnome cases, that's just a minor irritation.
Usually it furthers
competition and causes each of both software projects to develop faster.
I don't think Scribus would still lack booklet printing if there was another
FOSS page layout software
which supported it. ;-)
OTOH being able to rely on other small applications doesn't *force* you to
invent the wheel twice.
Or I should say "each time again" instead of "twice". Look at ghostscript.
There are many *nix
applications which put GS to use, but how may Windows applications can
render PostScript?
On *nix it would be most natural to generate a small filter for booklet
printing and extend kprinter
(or some equivalent) to provide a GUI for it. Then not only Scribus, but
also OO.o, KWord, AbiWord
and even FireFox would have booklet printing. Come to think of it, AFAIK
simple booklet printing is
already possible with kprinter. Maybe you should look for a Windows printer
driver for booklet printing?
