[Scribus] Backup and emergency files

Scribus 1.3.3.5, Window XP

Since Scribus is crashing frequently, I am saving frequently, and 
also I have autosave turned on. After a crash, I have the files

FILE                      LAST MODIFIED
MyDoc.sla                 t
MyDoc.sla.bak             t
MyDoc.sla.emergency       t+12 sec

If I try to open either .bak or .emergency, I get a message "Fatal 
error/<file> is not in an acceptable format". How can I recover my lost work?
