It looks like it is another incorrect encoding handling bug. I've fixed 
it in 1.3.4cvs, with 1.3.3.3 to come very shortly.

I'm pretty sure that many of the ascii() and latin1() calls in Scribus 
that aren't in a qDebug(...) represent encoding bugs, frankly. It's just 
a matter of searching them all out and checking each one.
