[Scribus] spaces disappear when importing a ps/eps, why?

Can anyone help me figure out and fix why when I export a PDF file in Acrobat
to EPS or PS, then import it into Scribus, the spaces (spacebar) between the
words disappears and the words run together?  Am I not doing something
correctly in the export to EPS step (just using default settings)
