>>>Can't I just make a text box, click on the box, and just start

I do that.
I just double click in the text box and start typing
It's slow and cumbersome and difficult to get the cursor to the right place if
you need to do
changes but good for quick placement of text.
Then use the Story Editor to make changes.
Make sure you save the text file as name.txt, where name is any filename you want.
You can open the .txt file in any word processor -as long as it's saved with the
.txt extension you
can plug it back into the scribus text box.
Do all the formatting with the Properties Dialog, not in the .txt file.
