Well, converting the entire artwork to PNG (bitmap format) is not a solution. 
It's a workaround. You want your vectors preserved as much as possible. 
Therefore you need true transparency flatening. Currently, the only way to do 
that, that I know of, is using acroread.

The CMYK thing should be solved, as others have explained, by

a. using color-managed workflow
b. using colors that are in CMYK gamut

The conversation was rather long, so I just skimmed over the details, but I 
think others have it covered. :D
