Have you tried the gutenprint driver for this printer?  The gutenprint web 
site says it is supported.  In any case it is worth a try since it costs you 
nothing other than some time to install, configure and test it.  I use the 
gutenprint drivers with both HP and Epson printers and I am getting good 
results YMMV.
