[Scribus] Font Help Please

The font I'm refering to is the Bitstream Vera Sans Bold font.
Is there a way to adjust the boldness of this font?
The bold it offers is too thick, and I've tried playing around with
Outlines, Scaling Width of Characters, and Scaling Height of Characters but
just can't seem to achieve a good balance.
Is my only option to edit the font, and as a novice would this be advisable
as I need to embed the font?
