In Gnome the file browser is Nautilus and someone once told me a clever
way to install fonts. You open a Search window and type "fonts:" or
"fonts//" or something like that and it opens a window showing all your
installed fonts, including fonts intalled globally. Then you can just
drag your new fonts into the window. Unfortunately, I didn't right down
the exact syntax and now I can't find it.

They did appear when I ran fc-list. And subsequently I launched Scribus
and they are now available. They are also available in OpenOffice.org
now. Other than running fc-list I did nothing. That is, nothing other
than restarting the computer about three times. But that had only to do
with the fact that we're in a heat wave (hit 40 today) and I kept
shutting down anything that might generate the slightest bit of heat.
So the font issue is resolved. I just wish I knew what finally made
them work. Thanks to you and Greg for the suggestions.
