Thanks for the suggestion. It did not work. Scribus is still not
sending a print job. However, doing the same thing from the command
line revealed part of the problem:

jjj at Devil5:~$ lp -dLaserjet-5Si-5Si-MX-Postscript-(recommended)
~/PLUG/Flyer1.sla bash: syntax error near unexpected token `('
jjj at Devil5:~$ lp -d"Laserjet-5Si-5Si-MX-Postscript-(recommended)"
~/PLUG/Flyer1.sla request id is
Laserjet-5Si-5Si-MX-Postscript-(recommended)-1202 (1 file(s))
jjj at Devil5:~$

Note that the latter command did send a print job. Of course, all that
came out of the printer was code because I just sent the file directly.
If I do it from the Scribus print dialog box no job is sent, even if I
copy and paste exactly the command that I used in the terminal into the
alternte print command box. I also tried adding the -1202 to the end,
but still no job is sent.

>From CUPS I can send a test page, and lp and lpr work from the command
line, so we know the printer is connected and working. I can also print
to it fine from any other program, e.g., OpenOffice.org, and even
Quickbooks running under WINE. I can export the Scribus document as PDF
and then print it with Kpdf or Adobe Reader too. While that is a
workaround, it is a pain when doing layout work where you need to see
if it actually looks correct when printed.
