This can be problematic, for example, if you build your own, then make 
install. For some distros like Fedora, the binaries don't end up in the 
same place, and depending on the pecking order of where your system 
looks for them, it may find an old one first, or it may find a mix of 
old and new binaries/libraries, and it doesn't work at all. If you have 
to roll your own, make sure you delete the old binaries first, and you 
may have to reboot for your system to know what's where.
