i'm a ubuntu newbie too and i found that the "linux bible 2008" at b-a-m to
have taught me more than the website documentation.

i think that it is an excellent book for a beginner.  it is written in basic
terminology along with some code to enter in the terminal to get things done
while configuring your system.

security, how to do it and why has it's own chapter.  the only lacking part
of the book was setting up wireless on a laptop.
