[scribus] question about page numbers

Hello All!  I am using version 1.3.3.12.  Using the tutorial on
Scribus.net, I see that to create page numbers I need to select
Insert, then Character and then  Page Number.  I can choose Insert and
Character no problem, but all the choices in the drop down menu from
Character are shadowed, not available, including Page Number.  Any
idea why?  And anyway I can do page numbers some other way?  Thank
you!
