Although the initial question was about eps it was prompted by my
failing to export a suitable image. It seems that my original images
were not as detailed as I thought and combined with too low a dpi when
exporting I was unhappy with the result. I think its ok.

Jeffrey I have installed inkscape and it may be more suitable for
single pages as you suggest.
