Thank you both for your replies.

First: I compiled scribus 1.3.5.1 fine on Debian stable with Qt 4.4.3-1
John's failing to compile may have to do with minor version differences.

Last April(?) I started using scribus 1.3.5 because it had some features
I liked. I chose to use it for production when it became a _release
candidate_. To me, a release candidate is as stable as is needed to
become the next production version; only when problems appear during
testing, changes are made. I knew then that I needed to complete a book
now (about Sept 15). It was kind of a gamble, but an educated gamble to
the best of my knowledge (I made many of these gambles in the last 15
years using Linux).

If one updates to the latest libraries during the release-candidate
testing-phase just to incluse the latest features, I think this is a
mistake.

Maybe scribus 1.3.5RC2 works, maybe not (with serious consequences). If
you like people to use your software for serious work, I think you may
need to reconsider your policies. So far it still works fine; soon I
will know whether the printer can handle the files or not.

Thank you,
Frits
