There also seems to be some unpredictable hardware (keyboard?) issues.
My Fedora 12 works fine with Story Editor, not directly in the frame 
(Edit Contents), but I have an older computer running F12 that refuses 
to make ° anywhere with a compose key, even outside of Scribus.

What I have done in the past sometimes is use Klipper to save a number 
of accented characters -- as clumsy as that is, it can be faster than 
some other workarounds.
