It helps to read the  Scribus book and the wiki.

I edit text in the story editor. I right click on the text frame and select
"edit text". Once in the story editor you can highlight the text and choose
values on the top icon bar of the story editor. Sometimes the particular thing 
you want to change is hidden so you have to click on the crosshatch 
sections to make the right box appear.

Another way to change the nature of the text is to click on the left column 
and select edit styles. You can then create a style that has the face you 
want and the size you want. Then you apply this style to all text where it is 
pertinent. 

All this is explained in more detail elsewhere. The tutorials are a big help.
