as far as i can tell, davide wants to put the page number on the master 
page and a picture behind it on the page (each page a different picture).

this won't sadly work in 1.3.8 and only works by using layers in 1.5svn.

by using a good mix of guides on the master pages, scrapbook elements 
and paragraph styles he should be able to somehow solve his problem 
without to much hassle...

well, it depends a bit on what you are producing (basically, layers are 
probably more interesting for brochures than for books...)
