next try...
... well it's not probably not the frame which is shown, but the white
background...
- does the image have a transparent background?
- have you left the background for the frame to none or to white?

The background was white. Changing it to transparent gets rid of the
frame/background displaying problem. Now, I can export a PDF from Scribus
that is acceptable to some printers. However, when I try to print a PDF in
the format required by a very widely used printer by using Adobe Acrobat, I
get the following error:
%%[ ProductName: Distiller ]%%
%%[ Error: undefined; OffendingCommand: gr ]%%
%%[ Flushing: rest of job (to end-of-file) will be ignored ]%%
%%[ Warning: PostScript error. No PDF file produced. ] %%
The Bookland barcode (an .eps file) seems to be the problem because, when I
remove that image from the document, Acrobat creates the PDF OK.
What could be the problem? No changes were made to the document that
Scribus exported to a PDF with the Bookland barcode image present.
