 Also you have 'layer effects' if you install the plugin http://registry.gimp.org/node/186 or from repository if you have Ubuntu ( perhaps in other linux flavor too)

In GIMP, you can produce this effect, either manually or by using the built-in "script-fu" for Drop Shadow:
