On my Slackware system I decide which pdf reader is to be used. I 
usually designate Acroread because it has the most features. 
When I prepare a doc for others to read (see below) I check it first 
in Acrobat Reader. It is the pdf reader that a wide range of users is 
likely to have access to. AFAIK the typical MSWin user will not 
have evince, epdf etc. Indeed I don't have those readers.
