[scribus] character palette will not close

I prepare an 8 page newsprint paper every other month.  Last issue in the  
middle of completing the layout a window opened smack dab in the center of my  
screen called character palette and I cannot get it to close, or move it out  
of the way.  Last time I just worked around it as I could not find out how to  
get rid of it.  This time after working on a couple of pages it showed up  
again.  I tried closing and opening the files and just installed 1.3.7 over  
the version I had but still have the problem.  I am working on a Macbook with  
Snow Leopard.  I presume this is a Scribus item as this is the only place it  
shows up.  I can work around it but it is extremely irritating.  Can someone  
tell me how to get rid of this thing?  Clicking on the red x does not work  
and it will not move.  Let me also stay I am a novice both with Mac and  
especially with Scribus, so really, really babystep answers, please.

The box below does not go beyond 2008 for build date, but this is what is in
