I agree that it is too much to expect developers to give new versions
the ability to save in old formats.
However, there is one feature that is really necessary. When Scribus
1.4.0 opens a file in the old format it should recognize that the file
it is opening is not in 1.4.0 format and do something to protect the
old file on disk from 1.4.0's auto-save feature. Either open the old
file as a copy or disable auto-save for the file, or at the very least
pop up a warning to the user.
