I am hardly a guru, but your dilemma is one I faced some months ago, also.
However, there are several facts that make the problem manageable and the
use of Scribus much easier, IMO.
First, you can run multiple instances of Scribus on your PC. That means you
can leave the 1.3.3.14 in place and install s newer "unstable" version along
with the stable version.
Secondly, you can save a copies of any older files for use with the older
version anytime you want to re-open them. So, the problem of being able to
revert back to the older version is solved for any file you have already
created, unless you used the unstable version to create it.
Now, based on my experience, I think you'll throw rocks at the stable
version after you've used the unstable version. It is better, although
different, in most areas. I would never go back. On top of that, I've used
software that was deemed production ready that had more defects than the
unstable Scribus-ng. I think the "unstable" label is pretty much a joke
when one considers Scribus 1.4.0.
Just my opinion, but given my experience, I don't think the problem is
nearly as difficult as you make it sound.
