I sometimes print to film instead of paper for the purpose of photolithography in printed circuit board (pcb) manufacturing at home. The UV processing of photosensitive boards requires high pattern opacity and also high resolution. Although I've never created film masks greater than 1200 dpi, this resolution is still 4x higher than the suggested 300 dpi maximum. 300 dpi would simply just not print good enough for a good photomask. I've been told at the printer that clients also use films for offset-printing purposes in the 3600 dpi range. My old eyes can't see pixels that small.
