I build images in Gimp at either 300 dpi or 600 dpi. I save them as png which
flattens them. Then I bring them into a graphics frame. Then I fit them to the
graphic frame. Usually this restores the high density of the image.

DPI and LPI have a complex relationship because they measure different things.
LPI is a printing term associated with half tone images. Per Masterson's "Book
Design and Production" "...the rule of thumb is to make the dpi resolution
about twice the lines per inch value used in printing..."

Masterson's book is inidispensable, even though he uses InDesign and not
Scribus.
