I got the same impression. gdb shows some kind of a cairo issue. As 
indicated in comments for the bug report 0009753 
(https://bugs.scribus.net/view.php?id=9753), after changing the theme 
from GTK+ to, e.g., Cleanlooks (using qtconfig), Scribus started normally.
