Pam,

I have used two programs for merging/splitting PDF files. PDF Split and Merge 
(http://sourceforge.net/projects/pdfmerge/) and PDFSam (http://www.pdfsam.org/). 
Both are open source and free. I have only used then for small files, ~1Mb but should 
work for larger files too. Also I have only used them for Windows.
