columns and margins are nice for text columns, but not suitable for
placing pictures on pages.
What is the grid intended for, if not for placing objects on the page?

Definitely not, this will confuse printers and printing service
providers, some will even print that wrong format or scale the page.
Please keep in mind that 12 points (if the modern definition of 72
points=1inch is used) is a divisor of an inch and thus of most US paper
formats, but not of ISO paper. 12 points are 4.23 mm, which means
differences up to 2,1 mm, which is definitely not negligible in most cases.
