I can easily imagine not wanting to automatically lose .autosave copies. 
One might find after many changes and saves that somehow you'd like to 
resurrect something on a prior version.

It's easy enough to 'rm *.autosave' periodically once they are not needed.

If you don't like .autosave files at all, just turn it off in Preferences.
